{"id":2849,"date":"2022-02-22T22:40:25","date_gmt":"2022-02-22T22:40:25","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.mahurumaori.com\/?p=2849"},"modified":"2022-03-29T00:07:24","modified_gmt":"2022-03-29T00:07:24","slug":"embracing-te-reo-maori-in-small-town-waikato","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.mahurumaori.com\/mao\/embracing-te-reo-maori-in-small-town-waikato\/","title":{"rendered":"Embracing te reo M\u0101ori in small town Waikato"},"content":{"rendered":"<div data-elementor-type=\"wp-post\" data-elementor-id=\"2849\" class=\"elementor elementor-2849\" data-elementor-post-type=\"post\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<section class=\"elementor-section elementor-top-section elementor-element elementor-element-e99e9b9 elementor-section-boxed elementor-section-height-default elementor-section-height-default\" data-id=\"e99e9b9\" data-element_type=\"section\" data-e-type=\"section\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-container elementor-column-gap-default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-column elementor-col-100 elementor-top-column elementor-element elementor-element-f92ac7a\" data-id=\"f92ac7a\" data-element_type=\"column\" data-e-type=\"column\">\n\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-wrap elementor-element-populated\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-fddc93e elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"fddc93e\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>Learning te reo M\u0101ori isn\u2019t exclusive, it\u2019s open to everyone and that\u2019s made clear at Te W\u0101nanga o Aotearoa\u2019s Apakura campus in Te Awamutu.\u00a0<\/p><p>Te reo M\u0101ori kaiako (teachers), Teiria Davis and Whaitiri Ngaheu are both passionate reo M\u0101ori speakers but are just as passionate about sharing the language and culture with anyone open to learning.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-66f011e elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"66f011e\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p><em>\u201cIt\u2019s a highlight seeing and hearing the language being spoken by our own M\u0101ori and by those who aren\u2019t M\u0101ori, just seeing all people experience our culture through the language,\u201d<\/em> says Whaitiri who is going into her first year as a kaiako, teaching the level 2 te reo M\u0101ori programme.<\/p><p>Teiria teaches the level 5 intermediate full immersion te reo M\u0101ori programme but doesn\u2019t just limit her teaching to the classroom.<\/p><p>She\u2019s so eager to see others learn that she\u2019s even taken lessons to her local gym.<\/p><p><em>\u201cI have been very fortunate to take te reo M\u0101ori to my gym and establish a r\u014dp\u016b (group) of like minded people who love to kori tinana (exercise), love hauora (health) and love to k\u014drero (speak) M\u0101ori at the same time,\u201d<\/em> says Teiria who has also been able to teach the gym coaches reo M\u0101ori tips and new words.<\/p><p>For both Teiria and Whaitiri, te reo M\u0101ori was a core part of their upbringing and keeping the language alive and thriving is all part of their drive to teach.<\/p><p><em>\u201cI back anything that serves our reo\u2019s revitalisation plan and I enjoy working in an environment where I can practice our M\u0101ori culture and exercise our te reo M\u0101ori and now I get to be apart of the responsibilty of sharing it,\u201d<\/em> says Whaitiri.<\/p><p>Teiria hopes that all tauira (students) she teaches, both inside the classroom and out will not only embrace the language and culture but learn to love it.<\/p><p>\u201cI love te reo M\u0101ori more than anything and I hope my tauira will love it as much as I do.
