It\u2019s a taonga (treasure) that we are lucky to have.\u201d<\/p><p>Maggie restarted her reo journey at Te W\u0101nanga o Aotearoa this year after she was encouraged by kaiako (teacher), Rauangi Ohia, to take the leap and study the\u00a0<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.twoa.ac.nz\/nga-akoranga-our-programmes\/te-reo-maori-maori-language\/te-ronakitanga-ki-te-reo-kairangi\">Level 5 Te R\u014dnakitanga programme<\/a><\/strong>.<\/p><p>At 75 years old, Maggie already had some reo M\u0101ori knowledge that she learnt in her childhood and some that she had learnt through a group she joined in Perth made up of mainly M\u0101ori, called \u2018Nans on a mission\u2019. But there were still moments that Maggie had doubts in her ability to study.<\/p><p>\u201cI honestly didn\u2019t think I was capable of doing the level 5 class, not at all. But Rauangi said I could do it. You don\u2019t realise that you\u2019re better than you think and I\u2019ve gone further than I thought.\u201d<\/p><p>Making her wh\u0101nau and her mokopuna (grandchildren) proud played a big part in Maggie\u2019s persistence with her study.<\/p><p>But she also acknowledged the many people who fought for reo M\u0101ori to be revitalised and normalised.<\/p><p>\u201cStudying has helped me see the good that\u2019s been done by so many of our people that I never saw before. We wouldn\u2019t have this if it wasn\u2019t for all those fighters. Everything they had to do to get it to where it is, they are pioneers.\u201d<\/p><p>Maggie loves that people from all cultures and backgrounds are learning reo M\u0101ori but she hopes to see more M\u0101ori from her generation learn and take back the language that was once taken from them.<\/p><p>\u201cThis programme is worth every minute, especially if you lost the reo. But now you can come and learn, it\u2019s given to us on a platter.
