I knew something was missing in my life and I could feel that pull.\u201d<\/p><p>Alicia\u2019s mum encouraged her to study at Te W\u0101nanga o Aotearoa after going on her own journey learning raranga (weaving) and rongo\u0101 M\u0101ori (M\u0101ori medicine).<\/p><p>In 2018, Alicia\u2019s desire became a reality when she enrolled to<strong>\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.twoa.ac.nz\/nga-akoranga-our-programmes\/te-reo-maori-maori-language\">study te reo M\u0101ori<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0at Te W\u0101nanga o Aotearoa.<\/p><p>\u201cTe W\u0101nanga o Aotearoa has opened doors for me that I thought were permanently locked. I\u2019ve been able to help bring back te reo to my wh\u0101nau.\u201d<\/p><p>After 5 years of study and reconnecting to her whakapapa, she has completed the<strong>\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.twoa.ac.nz\/nga-akoranga-our-programmes\/te-reo-maori-maori-language\/te-pinakitanga-ki-te-reo-kairangi\">level 7 Diploma in Te P\u012bnakitanga ki te Reo Kairangi<\/a><\/strong>. She was also this year\u2019s tauira (student) speaker, and proudly wore k\u0101kahu (cloak) woven by her mum, on stage at her graduation ceremony in\u00a0<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.twoa.ac.nz\/nga-rohe-our-location\/te-tai-tonga-porirua\/christchurch\">\u014ctautahi, Christchurch<\/a>.<\/strong><\/p><p>In 2021, while on her learning haerenga (journey) at Te W\u0101nanga o Aotearoa, Alicia was diagnosed with ADHD. But she highlights how her kaiako and fellow tauira encouraged and empowered her and how excited she was to reconnect with her Whanganui whakapapa.<\/p><p>\u201cYour journey will be your own and it will look different to others. You may have bursts of progression, then years of nothing. That\u2019s not a failure, it\u2019s just the nature of the journey.\u201d<\/p><p>Alicia and her mum have been able to impart their knowledge amongst their wh\u0101nau and communities, and Alicia encourages those with even the slightest desire to learn reo M\u0101ori, to give it a go.<\/p><p>\u201cThe vision of Te W\u0101nanga o Aotearoa is wh\u0101nau transformation through education. This has truly happened in my wh\u0101nau.
