I want to make sure, for the sake of our mokopuna, te reo M\u0101ori is revitalised in our wh\u0101nau. I want to greet my future moko in te reo M\u0101ori when they arrive.\u201d<\/p><p>Lara\u2019s journey began in 2020 with a\u00a0<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.twoa.ac.nz\/nga-akoranga-our-programmes\/te-reo-maori-maori-language\/certificate-in-te-ara-reo-maori-level-1-and-2\">Level 1<\/a>\u00a0<\/strong>programme at Te W\u0101nanga o Aotearoa in\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.twoa.ac.nz\/nga-rohe-our-location\/whirikoka-gisborne\"><strong>Whirik\u014dk\u0101<\/strong><\/a>. Though she recently walked the graduation stage to receive her tohu (qualification) for<strong>\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.twoa.ac.nz\/nga-akoranga-our-programmes\/te-reo-maori-maori-language\/certificate-in-te-ara-reo-maori-level-4\">Level 4<\/a>\u00a0<\/strong>and enrolled into a full immersion\u00a0<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.twoa.ac.nz\/nga-akoranga-our-programmes\/te-reo-maori-maori-language\/te-ronakitanga-ki-te-reo-kairangi\">Level 5 programme<\/a><\/strong>, Lara says that this is still only the beginning.<\/p><p>\u201cI know that learning Te Reo M\u0101ori is a tangible way I can acknowledge my support of my M\u0101ori wh\u0101nau members, my friends, students and my h\u0101pori. Learning te reo M\u0101ori has been a lifelong ambition of mine and I am not going to stop until I have learned all that I can.\u201d<\/p><p>Lara encourages anyone considering starting their te reo M\u0101ori journey to reach out to their nearest Te W\u0101nanga o Aotearoa campus.<\/p><p>\u201cThe journey starts with that first step and learning our national language is a lovely adventure. As we get older, we don\u2019t tend to make an effort to learn new skills and we really should because it is good for us. Learning te reo M\u0101ori is good for us, good for our wh\u0101nau, and good for our national cohesion. We should all learn te reo M\u0101ori because when we understand the language and culture of our neighbours, we can be a better neighbour.\u201d<\/p><p>Reflecting on her time at Te W\u0101nanga o Aotearoa so far, Lara says she appreciates the support that she\u2019s experienced throughout her journey.<\/p><p>\u201cI have made great friends. I have no wh\u0101nau apart from my husband in the town I live in, but I feel my kaiako and my classmates have treated me like wh\u0101nau. The kaiako are very knowledgeable and they always make you feel as though you are important to them.
