She\u2019s currently enrolled in\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.twoa.ac.nz\/nga-akoranga-our-programmes\/te-reo-maori-maori-language\/te-pinakitanga-ki-te-reo-kairangi\"><strong>Te P\u012bnakitanga ki te Reo Kairangi Level 7<\/strong>\u00a0<\/a>after completing\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.twoa.ac.nz\/nga-akoranga-our-programmes\/te-reo-maori-maori-language\/te-aupikitanga-ki-te-reo-kairangi\"><strong>Te Aupikitanga ki te Reo Kairangi Level 6<\/strong><\/a>.<\/p><p><em>&#8220;I started studying te reo when I was 18. I took a few classes during my bachelor&#8217;s and then did a full immersion year. I moved home (to Kaitaia) from Hamilton after graduating and I wanted a space to keep practicing and improving my reo M\u0101ori. I didn&#8217;t want to lose it,\u201d\u00a0<\/em>she says.<\/p><p>Continuing with her reo studies at her local Te W\u0101nanga o Aotearoa campus has allowed Sophie to learn from Te Tai Tokerau kaiako who\u2019ve shared a similar cultural background to her.<\/p><p>Sophie is grateful for the learning environment that\u2019s been created by the Te W\u0101nanga o Aotearoa kaiako and praises them for their dedication to their mahi and local community.<\/p><p><em>\u201cWe&#8217;re lucky to have a safe space to learn and kaiako that are passionate about what they&#8217;re teaching. I\u2019m so grateful for the time and dedication they give us. Even though I only started learning here last year, I\u2019m lucky to be here.\u201d<\/em><\/p><p>Sophie\u2019s journey is an example of the role that education plays in preserving and elevating M\u0101ori culture, inspiring other rangatahi M\u0101ori to embrace their language and identity.<\/p><p>Sophie&#8217;s advice to rangatahi considering learning te reo M\u0101ori is straightforward,\u00a0<em>&#8220;Be confident and don&#8217;t be shy. It&#8217;s easier said than done but stick to it and remember why you&#8217;re doing it.
