Quality was a was a huge part of what I took away from it. Quality in what you do and remaining in something until you reach a tohunga level, like an expert. Another huge thing I took away from it was strategies and tools that I can implement in my everyday life within my own whare, within my own wh\u0101nau to revitalise te reo M\u0101ori and ahurea M\u0101ori.\u201d<\/em><\/p><p>Celebrating language, culture, and the identity of M\u0101ori and wider Aotearoa, Toit\u016b Te Reo was held over 2 days at Toitoi Hawke&#8217;s Bay Arts &amp; Events Centre. Organised by reo advocate, Jeremy \u2018T\u0101tare\u2019 MacLeod, the event was a resounding success, bringing together thousands of people passionate about reo M\u0101ori.<\/p><p>Prior to enrolling with Te W\u0101nanga o Aotearoa, Annetia was fortunate enough to have had her own love for te reo M\u0101ori encouraged and nurtured by other teachers while enrolled in Te Tohu Paetahi at Waikato University.<\/p><p><em>\u201cThey (teachers) sowed into me my love of te reo M\u0101ori, te ao M\u0101ori, and te ahurea M\u0101ori. I inspired my husband to come back to his M\u0101ori culture and he is currently on\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.twoa.ac.nz\/hononga-stay-connected\/news-events\/2023\/10\/05\/whaanau-reunion-inspires-whangarei-local-to-learn-te-reo-maaori\"><strong>his journey to learn our reo<\/strong><\/a>. Then last year, I enrolled in\u00a0<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.twoa.ac.nz\/nga-rohe-our-location\/te-tai-tokerau-northland\/whangarei\">Whang\u0101rei<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0to help support him on his reo journey in\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.twoa.ac.nz\/nga-akoranga-our-programmes\/te-reo-maori-maori-language\/certificate-in-te-ara-reo-maori-level-1-and-2\"><strong>He P\u012b Ka Pao<\/strong><\/a>.\u201d<\/em><\/p><p>Annetia and her husband James have a goal for themselves and their wh\u0101nau to have an unshakable foundation for their M\u0101ori culture and to help revitalise their reo.<\/p><p><em>\u201cWithin my own wh\u0101nau, I&#8217;ve achieved the first step towards our M\u0101ori culture. An unexpected thing that has occurred in my wh\u0101nau whanui, is the normalisation of te reo M\u0101ori. I have elders within my wh\u0101nau who have commented that they&#8217;ve picked up a lot in the last 6 months alone. And where they may never speak reo M\u0101ori themselves, they&#8217;ve found that they are coming to understand more, which is beautiful.\u201d<\/em><\/p><p>Balancing life and study can be a challenge, but the support of her kaiako and other kaimahi at Te W\u0101nanga o Aotearoa has helped her through.<\/p><p><em>\u201cThe staff are wonderful people. You know, they&#8217;re all wh\u0101nau members themselves. They understand the pressure of having to balance your study and your life, and they&#8217;re always very understanding and considerate of us m\u0101tua (parents), in terms of our priorities and how we need to work in order to be able to study.\u201d<\/em><\/p><p>The personal growth and development during her journey will keep Annetia learning her reo and encouraging others to do the same.<\/p><p><em>\u201cMy biggest learning is the little nuggets of gold that you get in between and during lessons, and they may not have necessarily been written into the lesson plan, but those little nuggets are really eye opening. Do it. But be prepared. It will challenge you.
