Rukuwai is a Multimedia Journalist and Online Media Monitor for Te Ao Māori News. She has also worked on Te Kaea, Kawekōrero and Rereātea.

Rukuwai joined us for her Mahuru challenge last year posting up content regularly about how she’s going and we look forward to seeing more of her again this year.

Rukuwai started her career in iwi radio at Te Hiku Media in Kaitāia. There she worked as a radio host on Te Hiku’s political show, Taumatahanga, she presented regional and national livestreams and produced regional content for Māori Television (Ngā Pari Kārangaranga) and NZ on Air (Haukāinga).

Rukuwai first joined the news team in 2018 as a reporter for Te Kāea in our Auckland team. She became a regular panellist on Māori Television’s current affairs show Kawekōrero and went on to present both Kawekōrero and Te Kāea where needed.

Rukuwai then returned home to work alongside her people. She has returned to Māori Television and has since worked across Te Taitokerau as the Northland-based reporter and is now in Wellington getting her teeth stuck into politics ahead of the upcoming general elections.
